Quartetto Gelato

Quartetto Gelato

(left to right) Quartetto Gelato is Colin Maier, Elizabeth McLellan, Peter De Sotto and Alexander Sevastian

For over a decade, Quartetto Gelato has enchanted audiences and critics worldwide with its musical virtuosity, artistic passion, and charismatic anecdotes. Classical in training and eclectic by design, this dazzling ensemble thrills its audiences with a repertoire that includes classical masterworks, operatic arias, the sizzling energy of tangos, and gypsy and folk songs.

Peter De Sotto (tenor, violin, mandolin) performs not only as a classical musician, but also as a spirited gypsy virtuoso, with the added bonus of a brilliant operatic tenor. His vocal repertoire ranges from light pop, to authentic Irish folksongs, to the great Italian operatic arias.

Glenn Dicterow, concertmaster of The New York Philharmonic raved:  “Not only is Peter an amazing violinist capable of playing any style of music convincingly, he has one of the most gorgeous voices I have ever heard. I couldn’t believe any one person could possess that much talent.”

Alexander Sevastian (accordion, piano, bandoneon) was born in Minsk, Belarus, where he attended the Glinka Musical College. Advanced studies took him to the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow, where he received his Masters in Performance degree.

Alex began his professional career in Moscow, performing as soloist with the Russian Radio Orchestra throughout Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Italy and Japan. During this time, he was also an active recitalist and chamber musician, with appearances in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, Glinka Capella Hall (St. Petersburg), Suntory Hall (Tokyo), Roy Thomson Hall (Toronto) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), among others. More recent solo engagements include recitals in Mexico, Italy, Portugal, Serbia, the US and Canada.

Elizabeth McLellan (cello) began playing at the age of five in her hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan. She received her Performance Diploma from the Glenn Gould School of Music in Toronto and recently completed her Masters in Music under the tutelage of Dr. Thomas Weibe at the University of Western Ontario.

Liza is a regular performer for Toronto’s Soundstreams series, and a member/co-principal of Sinfonia Toronto. In addition, she works with numerous other ensembles throughout Ontario, including the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the Thunder Bay Symphony and Orchestra London. She has performed as a featured soloist and chamber musician at the prestigious Glenn Gould Studio (Toronto), The Heleconian Club (Toronto) and The Arts Project (London). Recent chamber work has taken her to New York, Montreal, Vancouver, Grenada, and throughout Germany.

Born and raised in Calgary (he is a rabid Flames fan), Colin Maier (oboe) received his performance degree from the University of Calgary, studying with David Sussman. A fan of QG since his college days, Colin is no stranger to genre-defying groups, having played with a wide variety of ensembles including The Calgary Philharmonic, Contact Contemporary Music Ensemble, Symphony of the Kootenays, The Jive Mommas, Scarborough Philharmonic, Niagara International Chamber Music Festival, The Fabulous Doo-Wop Boys, The Plaid Tongued Devils and The Jersey Boys Orchestra . In 2002, he was a featured oboist at the International Double Reed Festival, where he performed and conducted a jazz master class with legendary jazz bassoonist Michael Rabinowitz.

A veritable one-man orchestra, Colin also plays clarinet, English horn, violin, 5-string banjo, acoustic/electric bass, piano, saxophone, flute, guitar and harmonica. He is currently working to master the kitchen sink.

Outside music, he is a dancer, actor, stuntman, singer, choreographer, acrobat and martial-artist. He has been seen in shows such as Lord of the Rings, Forbidden Phoenix, Cirque du Soleil, Amadeus, Cats, A Chorus Line, and Sarah Brightman’s World Tour.

For breathtaking virtuosity, there’s nothing like Quartetto Gelato!
