The Festival Orchestra with Robert Moody Conducting
Beethoven famously wrote his Symphony #3 to honor the spirit of liberation embodied by First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte. When Napoleon subsequently crowned himself Emperor, the enraged composer added the title Eroica, with the scathing comment that the work celebrated “the Memory of a Great Man.” Even without this backdrop, this symphony represents a heroic step in terms of musical complexity, dramatic intensity, length and orchestral demands.
You will also experience the quieter side of heroism in Barber’s Adagio, perhaps the most touching elegy for fallen heroes ever written.
Finally, a stirring work that showcases soprano Elizabeth Bishop, baritone Troy Cook and the Arizona Musicfest Chorus: Dona Nobis Pacem by Vaughan Williams. Sung in English, this powerful music depicts the human cost of peace. For what are heroes if not those who ignore themselves to help another?
